WATER-SAVING

Protect Our Limited Water Resources and Connect With the Future

As a supplier of bathroom and kitchen plumbing products, we believe we have the duty to respond to the issue of depletion of water resources, as it significantly affects the daily lives of everyone. Accordingly, we continue to promote the reduction of water consumption during product use by developing water-efficient and comfortable products and distributing them on a global scale.

Water-Saving Performance of Toilets

Based on a typical family structure (2 males and 2 females), 51% reduction in water consumption between the product launched in 1999 and the current Neorest, resulted 3.8 litres for the large flushes (3 litres for the small flushes).

We have been working to reduce the amount of water needed to flush toilets and to expel and transport waste while ensuring toilets remain pleasant to use. In the current NEOREST Series, we created a toilet that uses only 3.8L of water per flush. In addition, we are striving to improve the water-conservation performance of our showers and other water faucets.

CARBON NEUTRALITY

Carbon Neutrality Initiatives

We recognize the impact of climate change as a business risk and work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions based on scientific grounds. On average, our products are used over a period of 10 to 20 years. If analyzed from the perspective of the product life cycle, this means the period of product use accounts for over 90% of our overall CO2 emissions. By actively working to reduce emissions at the use stage of the product life cycle, we aim to realize both comfortable and eco-friendly everyday lifestyles. In regard to the volume of CO2 emissions from our business activities, we are promoting reduction plans that take into account our long-term business growth. Under these plans, we are actively introducing renewable energy sources.

TOTO's Carbon Neutrality
Commitment

INITIATIVE

TOTO has endorsed international initiatives aimed at achieving a sustainable society and carbon neutrality. TOTO obtained certification from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in June 2021 for its target to limit global warming to well below 2°C (WB2ºC). Furthermore, in March 2024 TOTO updated its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for 2030 and received certification for the 1.5°C level, which aims to limit the increase in the average global temperature to less than 1.5°C compared to preindustrial levels.

PRODUCT TRANSPARENCY

Within the TOTO Group, we evaluate the environmental impact during the product planning and design process by referencing guidelines related to life-cycle assessment, and we strive to improve the energy-saving and water-saving performance of our products. In light of increasing expectations for the highly transparent disclosure of Environmental data aimed at achieving carbon neutrality in recent years, we have been objectively assessing Environmental impact across the entire value chain for major products.

LCA
(Life Cycle Assessment)

To quantitatively and objectively evaluate the environmental impact throughout all stages of a product's lifecycle, from the procurement of materials to manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal.

LCA(Life Cycle Assessment):

As part of these initiatives, we have obtained Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for our representative products such as "Back-to-Wall, Floor Standing toilets, wall-hung toilets, mixer faucets, WASHLET® , and Smart toilet."* An EPD is a report in which the environmental impact—from raw material procurement to manufacturing, logistics, use, disposal, and recycling—is calculated using a method compliant with ISO (ISO14040/44) and verified by a third-party organization.
We will continue to use LCA to identify environmental impacts at each stage of the value chain and work to reduce them.
For products that have obtained an EPD, please check the link.

REGIONAL CONTRIBUTION

Aim for Sustainable Development Together with Local Communities

For sustainable future development where water resources are used effectively, the activities of local organizations are as essential as corporate business.
To support this, the TOTO Group established the TOTO Water Environment Fund in 2005 and continues to support organizations engaged in water-related environmental activities.

TOTO Water Environment Fund

This is a fund established by TOTO in 2005 in order to contribute a more sustainable society through support for civilian organizations that engage in water-related environmental activities. With a shared desire to solve issues surrounding the water environment together, we support organizations whose activities are community-based and sustainable, not just temporary projects. The areas where grant recipients are active are located not only in Japan but also in countries and regions around the world. For example, citizens’ activities for environmental conservation in Japan play an important role in revitalizing the relationship between water and daily life, and TOTO Group employees also participate in those activities as volunteers, working together as members of the local community in order to solve problems. Furthermore, overseas, together with the installation of toilets and hand washing facilities, etc. in order to improve the sanitation environment, it is imperative to carry out activities to communicate the appropriate way to use and manage installed fittings as well as training on water sanitation knowledge in order to firmly establish systems for maintenance and management. There are also many other water-related social problems affecting the world, and TOTO will continue to support organizations that are engaged in community-based activities aimed at solving these problems. TOTO will continue to work with organizations that share that same commitment to the water environment with the aim of contributing a more sustainable society.

Introduction of TOTO Water Environment Fund

Based on the passion of our stakeholders, the TOTO Water Environment Fund provides grants to support local organizations.
In addition to financial support through grants, TOTO Group employees participate in the activities of the grant recipients, working together with local communities to solve challenges.
This is a unique system where the involvement of both internal and external stakeholders in the Fund raises their awareness of social issues, thereby expanding the circle of participants in our activities.
